Wheel Alignment Technician Jobs

Wheel Alignment Technician Jobs UK

The Wheel Alignment Technician is the specialist whose precision measurement and adjustment work maintains the relationship between a vehicle's tyres and the road that every other element of the vehicle's dynamic behaviour depends upon. Correct wheel alignment - the accurate setting of camber angles, caster angles, toe-in and toe-out measurements, thrust angle and ride height relative to the manufacturer's specification - is not purely a handling and comfort matter. It is a tyre life issue, a fuel economy issue and, in the context of modern advanced driver assistance systems, a safety system calibration issue whose significance is only increasing as ADAS-equipped vehicles become the majority of the national car parc.

A vehicle driven with incorrect alignment wears its tyres unevenly and prematurely. The customer who drives a misaligned vehicle for twelve months and returns for a tyre change has experienced a measurable economic loss directly attributable to the alignment condition that was not corrected at their last service. The workshop that corrected the tyres without measuring the geometry has generated a repeat tyre sale earlier than it should have been needed and created a customer whose overall cost of ownership is higher than it would have been under good maintenance practice. The Wheel Alignment Technician who identifies the alignment condition, diagnoses whether it is a primary geometry deviation or a symptom of suspension component wear, communicates the finding clearly and executes the correction accurately is the professional who genuinely improves the customer's vehicle rather than simply completing the booked job.

The ADAS complication is increasingly central to the role. Front cameras, radar units mounted behind front bumpers and LIDAR sensors integrated into modern vehicles are calibrated with reference to the vehicle's wheel plane. A wheel alignment adjustment on a vehicle equipped with lane departure warning, automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control or any other ADAS function that relies on a forward-facing sensor may require the sensor to be recalibrated following the geometry change. The Wheel Alignment Technician who understands this interaction - and who identifies ADAS recalibration as a necessary post-alignment step on equipped vehicles - is protecting the safety system's correct function and protecting the workshop from potential liability for a system malfunction that follows an incomplete post-alignment procedure.

Venatu recruits Wheel Alignment Technicians for permanent and contract roles across fast fit and tyre centre networks, independent workshops, franchised car dealerships and specialist alignment and ADAS calibration businesses throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership and operational support recruitment divisions. For the combined tyre and alignment role, see the Tyre Technician page. For ADAS calibration as a dedicated specialism, see the ADAS Calibration Technician page.

  • Tyre and Alignment Technician
  • Alignment and Steering Technician
  • ADAS Alignment Technician
  • Senior Wheel Alignment Technician
  • Alignment Technician (Workshop)

Who Can Apply

Wheel Alignment Technician roles attract candidates from automotive technical and tyre backgrounds. Strong placements typically come from:

  • Experienced Wheel Alignment Technicians at tyre centres, workshops or dealerships who want to move to a new employer, a better-equipped operation or an improved package
  • Tyre Technicians who have been conducting alignment checks as part of a tyre and alignment service and want to develop the alignment dimension into their primary specialisation, operating more complex four-wheel systems, developing their suspension geometry diagnostic ability and managing ADAS recalibration requirements post-adjustment
  • Fast Fit Vehicle Technicians who have used alignment equipment as part of a broader fast fit service scope and want a dedicated wheel alignment role where operating the alignment system, diagnosing geometry faults and managing post-alignment ADAS procedures are the daily focus rather than one task among many
  • Service Technicians or Vehicle Technicians who have developed a strong interest in suspension geometry, steering systems and the interaction between alignment geometry and vehicle dynamic behaviour, and who want to develop a specialist alignment appointment alongside or as a development from their general workshop qualification
  • MOT Tester Vehicle Technicians whose detailed understanding of steering and suspension component condition from the MOT inspection perspective translates directly into the diagnostic dimension of the Wheel Alignment Technician role, where identifying the worn component that is causing the geometry deviation is as important as measuring the deviation itself
  • Mobile Tyre Technicians who want to return to a static workshop environment and develop alignment equipment competency as a specialism within a tyre and alignment centre or workshop setting
  • Entry-level and developing technicians with a strong interest in vehicle geometry, handling and safety systems who want to develop alignment equipment operating skills under structured employer guidance, with a development pathway toward ADAS calibration capability as the specialism matures

Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent is the standard technical foundation for adjustment-level alignment roles where suspension component diagnosis and steering system work are within scope. For alignment equipment operation and measurement without adjustment to suspension components, a Level 2 background with employer alignment equipment training is common in tyre centre environments. Hunter, Hofmann, Supertracker or equivalent alignment system training is provided by most employers. IMI or manufacturer ADAS calibration training is increasingly offered for technicians operating on ADAS-equipped vehicles. A full Category B driving licence is required. Venatu confirms the equipment type, vehicle category and ADAS scope with each employer before presenting candidates.

What the Role Involves

Alignment Measurement and Assessment:

  • Setting up vehicles on the alignment bay, positioning the vehicle on the alignment plates or rollers, fitting the alignment system's wheel-mounted targets or sensors securely and correctly to each wheel and initiating the measurement sequence on the alignment system's control computer
  • Conducting the pre-alignment vehicle inspection - assessing tyre condition and pressures, checking for obviously worn steering or suspension components including ball joints, track rod ends, wishbone bushes, anti-roll bar links and wheel bearings, and verifying that ride height is within the normal range before measuring geometry against the manufacturer's specification, identifying and communicating any components that must be replaced before the alignment can be correctly set
  • Reading the alignment system's measurement output accurately, comparing each parameter - front toe, rear toe, front camber, rear camber, caster, thrust angle and cross-car symmetry - against the manufacturer's specification for the specific vehicle derivative, identifying which parameters are within tolerance and which require adjustment and communicating the measurement results to the customer or Service Advisor in terms that make the significance of any out-of-tolerance finding clear

Geometry Adjustment and Correction:

  • Carrying out toe adjustments on vehicles where the alignment system confirms front or rear toe is outside the manufacturer's specification, using the appropriate adjustment mechanism for the vehicle's suspension design - track rod end rotation, eccentric bolt adjustment, shim adjustment, or dedicated rear toe adjustment linkage depending on the vehicle's architecture - and verifying the adjustment's result against the specification on the system's live measurement display
  • Carrying out camber adjustments where the vehicle's suspension design includes a camber adjustment provision - through eccentric bolts, upper strut mount adjustment, adjustable wishbone or dedicated camber bolt systems - verifying the camber result against specification and ensuring any camber adjustment does not disturb the toe setting that was corrected earlier in the sequence
  • Completing the post-adjustment verification measurement session, recording the final before and after geometry measurements for the customer record and confirming that all adjusted parameters are within the manufacturer's specification tolerances before the vehicle is removed from the alignment bay

Suspension Fault Diagnosis and Communication:

  • Identifying vehicles where the alignment is outside specification because of a worn or damaged suspension or steering component rather than a primary geometry deviation, distinguishing between misalignment caused by an adjustable setting that has moved over time and misalignment caused by a worn ball joint, collapsed bush, damaged wishbone or bent steering component that will return the geometry to an incorrect setting as soon as the vehicle is driven
  • Communicating the component replacement requirement clearly to the customer or Service Advisor in terms that explain why the alignment cannot be set correctly until the component is replaced, what the component failure is doing to the vehicle's tyre wear and handling, and what the consequence will be of driving on a worn component beyond the recommendation
  • Referring the identified component replacement work to the appropriate workshop resource - the Service Technician or Vehicle Technician team for workshop-scope suspension repairs - and scheduling the alignment re-check as the conclusion of the completed repair rather than an optional additional item

ADAS Calibration Awareness and Post-Alignment Procedure:

  • Identifying vehicles equipped with ADAS sensors whose calibration may be affected by a wheel alignment adjustment, checking the manufacturer's ADAS recalibration requirement for the specific system type and the alignment adjustment carried out, and communicating the recalibration requirement to the customer and service team before the vehicle is released
  • Performing static ADAS calibration procedures where the employer's equipment capability and the technician's training authorisation allow, setting up the manufacturer-required target boards or calibration frames to the correct position in front of the vehicle, initiating the calibration sequence through the vehicle's diagnostic system and verifying the successful completion of the calibration before releasing the vehicle
  • Escalating ADAS recalibration requirements that exceed the workshop's equipment or the technician's current authorisation to the appropriate specialist, whether the employer's dedicated ADAS calibration resource or a specialist calibration business, ensuring the customer understands the requirement and the process before the vehicle leaves. FAQ

What does a Wheel Alignment Technician do? A Wheel Alignment Technician measures and adjusts a vehicle's suspension and steering geometry - including toe, camber, caster and thrust angle - using precision four-wheel alignment equipment, comparing measured parameters against the manufacturer's specification, identifying any worn suspension component preventing correct geometry, communicating findings to the customer, carrying out approved adjustments and, on ADAS-equipped vehicles, identifying and managing any sensor recalibration requirement following the alignment procedure.

What alignment systems do Wheel Alignment Technicians typically use? The most commonly installed systems in the UK automotive sector are Hunter Engineering (including the HawkEye Elite and WinAlign platforms), Hofmann Geodyna, Supertracker and Beissbarth. Each manufacturer's system uses a different target geometry method - camera-based 3D imaging, laser projection or wireless sensor - but the alignment measurement principles, specification comparison and adjustment sequence are equivalent across platforms. Most employers provide equipment-specific training on their installed system. Technicians who have worked on more than one platform are more adaptable across employer environments. Venatu confirms the specific equipment type with each employer before presenting candidates.

What does a Wheel Alignment Technician earn in the UK? Experienced Wheel Alignment Technicians earn between £28,000 and £38,000. ADAS Alignment Technicians earn between £32,000 and £44,000. Senior Wheel Alignment Technicians earn between £34,000 and £46,000. Performance bonuses linked to alignment revenue and suspension referral work add to earnings at fast fit and tyre centre network operations. Venatu benchmarks total package with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Wheel Alignment Technician? Common progression routes include Senior Wheel Alignment Technician, ADAS Calibration Technician for those who develop the calibration equipment competency and manufacturer training to operate across the full ADAS calibration scope, and Service Technician or Vehicle Technician for those who want to develop alignment and ADAS specialism within a broader technical qualification framework. Alignment specialists who combine their geometry expertise with Level 3 technical qualification and ADAS calibration training are among the most technically distinctive and commercially valuable workshop professionals in the evolving automotive service market.
