What the Role Involves

Structural Body Fabrication:

• Fabricating structural body frames and subframes in steel, aluminium or combined section materials to the body builder's design drawings and specification, using cutting, bending, drilling and welding techniques appropriate to the material and section profile, and verifying dimensional accuracy throughout the build process against the chassis interface drawing and the body specification
• Welding structural joints using MIG, TIG or other specified process to the visual and structural standard the body type and application requires, conducting self-inspection of weld quality before moving to the next stage and flagging any joint requiring re-work before it is covered by cladding or lining material
• Installing body floor structures, cross-members, longerons and mounting points to the vehicle chassis in the correct sequence, applying appropriate anti-corrosion treatment to dissimilar metal contact points and chassis mounting interfaces before bolting and welding the body frame to the chassis in the configuration the order specification requires

Panel and Cladding Installation:

• Cutting and fitting exterior body panels in steel, aluminium, GRP or composite material to the body's structural frame, managing panel joint tolerances, applying the specified sealant and fastening system consistently across the panel run and ensuring the exterior surface presents without visible bow, ripple or misaligned joint lines

Electrical, Hydraulic and Equipment Installation:

• Installing body electrical circuits for interior lighting, load area lighting, tail lift power supply, refrigeration unit connection and any body-specific operational equipment circuit, running cables to the body builder's harness routing standard, terminating connections correctly and labelling circuits for maintenance identification
• Installing hydraulic systems for tipping bodies, tail gate lifters and any other hydraulic body function, connecting pressure and return lines, bleeding the system correctly and testing under load to the system's rated pressure before the vehicle is cleared for delivery
• Fitting ancillary body equipment - roof bars, lamp clusters, side guards, mudguard assemblies, access steps and handrails, loading lights and reversing aids - to the completed body structure, ensuring all fittings are secure, correctly torqued and compliant with the relevant standards for the vehicle's operating environment

Quality and Compliance:

• Completing quality inspection records for each stage of the body build process, ensuring the completed vehicle is signed off against the order specification before it moves to final finishing and production release
