What the Role Involves

Tyre Fitting and Replacement:

• Carrying out tyre removal and fitting on passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, SUVs and four-wheel-drive vehicles, using tyre changing machine and specialist tools for low-profile, run-flat and stiff-sidewall tyre types, and applying correct bead lubrication, seating pressure and inflation procedures to ensure safe bead seating without rim or tyre damage
• Balancing fitted wheels using static and dynamic wheel balancing equipment, reading the balancer's output accurately, applying the correct balance weight type and placement for the wheel's alloy or steel construction and verifying the balance result before the wheel is returned to the vehicle
• Verifying tyre specification is correct for the vehicle's requirements before fitting, checking the speed index, load index, construction designation and any manufacturer-specific approval marking relevant to the vehicle, and raising any specification concern with the customer or service advisor before proceeding
• Torquing wheel fasteners to the manufacturer's specification using a calibrated torque wrench or torque sticks, applying the correct tightening sequence and confirming torque after a defined mileage interval where the employer's procedure requires it

TPMS Programming and Management:

• Diagnosing TPMS warning light status during pre-fitting checks, identifying whether the system requires sensor replacement, relearn procedure or simply reinflation and monitoring reset following a tyre change
• Programming replacement TPMS sensors to the correct frequency and protocol for the vehicle's manufacturer system using the workshop's programming tool, completing the relearn procedure or triggering the vehicle's OBD relearn route as required and verifying the TPMS system returns to a normal operation status after the repair
• Advising customers on TPMS operation and the significance of warning light illumination, ensuring customers understand that a TPMS fault requires attention rather than ignoring and that correct tyre pressures - which vary by load condition on many modern vehicles - support both safety and tyre life

Wheel Alignment:

• Conducting four-wheel alignment checks on vehicles presenting with tyre wear patterns, steering pull, vibration or following suspension repair or tyre replacement, using the workshop's laser or camera-based alignment system to measure current geometry against the manufacturer's specification
• Carrying out alignment adjustments to correct camber, caster and toe settings where the vehicle's suspension geometry is adjustable, completing the post-adjustment verification measurement and documenting the before and after readings for the customer record
• Identifying vehicles where alignment is outside specification but cannot be corrected by adjustment - typically due to suspension or steering component wear - and communicating the situation to the customer clearly, explaining the component replacement required before alignment work will be effective

Tyre Condition Assessment and Customer Communication:

• Reading tyre wear patterns accurately during vehicle checks and tyre inspections, identifying abnormal wear indicative of under-inflation, over-inflation, camber wear, one-sided wear from toe misalignment and feathering patterns from alignment issues, and communicating findings to the service advisor or directly to the customer in a way that explains the safety significance without generating unnecessary alarm
• Inspecting tyres for sidewall damage, impact bulges, kerbing damage, cracking and tread depth at multiple points across the tread face, identifying any tyre that should be replaced on safety grounds before fitting or returning the vehicle and recording the findings on the vehicle health check
