Service Technician Jobs

Service Technician Jobs UK

The Service Technician is the vehicle maintenance and repair professional whose work forms the productive core of a fast fit, fleet, independent or non-franchised automotive workshop operation. Carrying out the full range of vehicle servicing, safety checks, tyre and brake work, MOT preparation and mechanical repairs that keep a customer's or operator's vehicle fleet roadworthy, the Service Technician is the role through which the majority of automotive technical professionals build the broad competency base that underpins every subsequent step in their career.

The Service Technician title is used widely across non-franchised and light commercial vehicle workshop environments - fast fit and autocentre networks, fleet maintenance businesses, independent garages, lease and rental company maintenance operations and some franchised operations at the developing technician level. It describes a technically capable vehicle maintenance professional who is competent across the mainstream servicing and repair scope, who may hold MOT Tester authorisation for their vehicle category and who is developing - or has developed - the diagnostic depth that marks progression from producing output efficiently to resolving problems independently.

The distinction from a Vehicle Technician title is predominantly one of environment and convention rather than a formal difference in scope. In franchised dealership workshops the title Vehicle Technician is more commonly used. In fast fit, fleet and independent environments the Service Technician title is standard practice. Candidates holding either designation are typically competitive for roles advertised under both, and Venatu advises on cross-market positioning when a candidate wants to move between environments.

Venatu recruits Service Technicians for permanent and contract roles across fast fit and autocentre networks, fleet management and contract maintenance businesses, independent garages, lease and rental company workshops and franchised dealerships throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership and operational support recruitment divisions.

Who Can Apply

Service Technician roles attract candidates across a range of experience levels. Strong placements typically come from:

  • Experienced Service Technicians at fast fit, fleet or independent operations who want to move to a new employer, a better-equipped facility or an improved package
  • Apprentice Vehicle Technicians who have completed their training programme and want to apply their qualification in a fast fit, fleet or independent workshop environment rather than a franchised dealership
  • Fast Fit Vehicle Technicians who have developed their competency beyond the standard fast fit scope and want to move into a broader service and repair role where diagnostics, bookings-based workshop production and a wider range of vehicle systems are part of the daily workload
  • Mobile Vehicle Technicians who want to return to a structured workshop environment, applying their broad vehicle knowledge and self-sufficient working style within a well-equipped static operation
  • MOT Testers who want a Service Technician role where their testing authorisation is a valued addition to a full servicing and repair scope rather than a standalone function
  • Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technicians at the developing end of their EV qualification who want a service technician role at a fast-growing fleet or service centre operation where their EV capability is valued and developed
  • General mechanics from agricultural, plant or commercial vehicle backgrounds who have strong practical mechanical competency on large vehicles and want to develop a car and LCV specialism in a structured workshop environment with employer-supported training
  • Military vehicle maintainers transitioning into civilian automotive employment, whose hands-on vehicle maintenance experience transfers well into the service technician role with appropriate bridging training

Level 2 or Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair is the standard qualification depending on the position level. DVSA Class 4 and Class 7 MOT Tester authorisation is highly valued and typically employer-funded where not already held. High-voltage safety qualification is increasingly relevant for operations serving hybrid and electric vehicle fleets. A Category B driving licence is required. Venatu confirms all qualification and licence requirements with each employer before presenting candidates.

What the Role Involves

Vehicle Servicing:

  • Carrying out scheduled manufacturer and interim service work on passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and company fleet vehicles, completing engine oil and filter changes, air and cabin filter replacements, spark plug replacement, coolant and brake fluid flush procedures and all associated service items within the allocated time to the required quality standard
  • Conducting safety checks and multi-point vehicle inspections as part of the service procedure, completing digital or paper vehicle condition reports with accurate tyre tread measurements, brake pad and disc measurements, fluid level readings and lighting checks, and communicating findings to the service reception team for customer presentation

Brakes, Tyres and Mechanical Repair:

  • Carrying out brake component replacement including front and rear disc, pad, drum and shoe replacement, brake caliper servicing and bleeding, parking brake adjustment and brake fluid renewal, working accurately to torque specifications and EPB reset procedures as required
  • Fitting tyres to the correct TPMS and torque specification, carrying out four-wheel alignment checks and adjustments using the workshop's alignment equipment, balancing wheels accurately and advising the service team on any tyre wear patterns that indicate a suspension or alignment condition requiring further investigation
  • Diagnosing and repairing common mechanical faults including suspension component wear, exhaust system replacement, engine cooling system maintenance and ancillary belt and tensioner replacement, working within the technician's qualification scope and escalating to a Senior Technician or Service Team Leader where diagnosis requires a depth beyond the current standard

MOT Testing:

  • Conducting DVSA Class 4 and Class 7 MOT tests for vehicles presented through the workshop, applying the test standard rigorously and consistently, completing all pass and fail documentation accurately within the DVSA's online testing service platform and issuing advisory notices where appropriate
  • Managing pre-test inspections on vehicles booked for MOT, identifying items likely to result in a failure and communicating the repair requirement to the service reception team before committing the vehicle to a test that will generate a fail record

Diagnostics and Fault Finding:

  • Using diagnostic scan tools to retrieve fault codes and live data from vehicle systems, interpreting the information in the context of the presenting symptom and carrying out the indicated repair or escalating to a more experienced technician where the diagnostic complexity requires a higher level of intervention
  • Staying current with common fault patterns on the vehicle makes and models in the workshop's primary service population, using technical information resources and manufacturer service bulletins to improve first-time fix rates on frequently recurring issues

FAQ

What is the difference between a Service Technician and a Vehicle Technician? In practical terms the technical scope is the same. The title difference reflects the working environment - Vehicle Technician is the more common designation within franchised dealership workshops, while Service Technician is standard in fast fit, fleet, independent and non-franchised environments. Candidates who hold the appropriate Level 3 qualification, MOT Tester authorisation and a strong service and repair background are typically competitive for roles advertised under either title. Venatu advises candidates on how to position their background when moving between environments.

Do Service Technicians need an MOT Tester authorisation? Not universally, but MOT Tester authorisation - typically Class 4 for cars and Class 7 for light commercial vehicles - substantially increases a Service Technician's commercial value and access to a wider range of roles. Many employers fund MOT Tester training for Service Technicians who do not already hold it. Venatu confirms whether MOT testing is a requirement or a preference with each employer before presenting candidates.

What does a Service Technician earn in the UK? Experienced Service Technicians earn between £28,000 and £38,000. Service Technicians with MOT Tester authorisation earn between £30,000 and £42,000. Senior Service Technicians earn between £34,000 and £46,000. Tool allowances and employer-funded training are common benefits. Venatu benchmarks total package with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Service Technician? Common progression routes include Senior Vehicle Technician, Service Team Leader and Service Manager for those who develop a team leadership interest. For Service Technicians who develop diagnostic depth, the Diagnostic Technician and Master Technician pathways are available at franchised operations.
