Service Manager Jobs

Service Manager Jobs UK

The Service Manager is the operational and commercial leader of the dealership's service department - accountable for the team of Service Advisors and workshop technicians whose combined output constitutes the aftersales operation's revenue, customer satisfaction and cost performance. The role sits at the juncture between customer experience management, workshop productivity leadership, labour sales performance and manufacturer standard programme compliance, holding all of those responsibilities simultaneously in an environment that is consistently fast-moving, operationally complex and commercially significant.

The Service Manager who operates at a high level does not simply oversee the department from a management position - they actively develop the service advisors who generate the labour revenue, improve the workshop controller's scheduling efficiency to increase throughput, protect the financial performance of the warranty and service plan functions and ensure the manufacturer's customer satisfaction survey results reflect the quality of the experience the team consistently delivers. That breadth of accountability - commercial, operational, people, compliance - is what makes the Service Manager one of the most complete management roles in the automotive retail sector.

In the context of the electrified vehicle transition, the Service Manager's responsibility extends to ensuring the service department's capability - in terms of technician qualification, equipment, advisor product knowledge and booking process - is adequate for the EV and hybrid service population now visiting the dealership. A service department that cannot service or diagnose an electric vehicle confidently, or whose advisors cannot explain the charging system service requirements to a customer booking in for their first EV service, is failing the manufacturer's customer experience standard in a way that carries direct financial and reputational consequences.

Venatu recruits Service Managers for permanent and contract roles across franchised car and commercial vehicle dealerships throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership and truck and van recruitment divisions. For the senior management level above, see the Head of Aftersales page. For developing-level advisors progressing toward this role, see the Senior Service Advisor page.

Who Can Apply

Service Manager roles attract senior candidates from within the aftersales function and from adjacent management backgrounds. Strong placements typically come from:

  • Experienced Service Managers at franchised dealerships who want to move to a new employer, a larger or more prestigious franchise, a better-resourced department or an improved package
  • Senior Service Advisors who have been performing in a management-adjacent capacity - deputising for the service manager, leading the advisor team on a daily basis, managing workshop scheduling in the manager's absence - and who are ready to take on the full Service Manager accountability at a new employer where that step is available
  • Head of Aftersales professionals at smaller operations who want to move to a larger franchise as a Service Manager, accepting that the scope is narrower in exchange for a more developed dealership environment and a stronger team infrastructure
  • Workshop Controllers who have been managing workshop throughput and technician team performance and want to add the service reception and customer satisfaction dimension to their accountability scope in a full Service Manager role
  • Parts Managers with strong aftersales management experience who want to move from the parts function into a service management role, where their understanding of the wholesale and retail parts environment adds a commercial dimension to the service department's labour sales and parts attachment management
  • Commercial vehicle service managers transitioning from the truck and van sector into car dealership service management, where their rigorous compliance background, fleet operator account management experience and commercial workshop management capability transfer strongly into the franchised car environment
  • Operations managers from adjacent sectors - fast fit networks, automotive warranty businesses or fleet maintenance operations - who have managed service teams and customer satisfaction performance at scale and want to develop into franchised dealership service management with the manufacturer brand environment that represents the sector's highest standard

Strong DMS proficiency - Keyloop, Autoline or Pinewood - is essential. Thorough understanding of workshop labour rate management, technician productivity measurement, warranty claim integrity, service plan revenue management and the manufacturer's CSI survey framework is expected. Venatu confirms the franchise brand, DMS environment, team size and P&L scale with each employer before presenting candidates.

What the Role Involves

Commercial Performance and Labour Sales:

  • Owning the service department's labour sales performance against the monthly and annual plan, reviewing daily and weekly revenue against budget, identifying departures from plan early and adjusting the team's approach rather than waiting for month-end to reveal a problem that has been accumulating for three weeks
  • Managing the department's key commercial metrics - labour revenue, effective labour rate, parts to labour ratio, service plan revenue, warranty recovery and quick-lane conversion - understanding the interdependencies between them and applying targeted interventions when individual metrics underperform
  • Coaching the Service Advisor team on additional work presentation technique, developing each advisor's individual authorisation rate through ride-along observation, call listening, post-authorisation debrief and structured development conversations rather than simply setting targets and reviewing outcomes

Workshop Productivity and Throughput:

  • Working with the workshop controller to manage daily throughput - ensuring the technician's productivity is optimised through accurate booking timeframes, efficient job allocation, timely additional work authorisation and prompt parts availability, rather than allowing preventable waiting time to erode productive hours
  • Monitoring the workshop's efficiency and productivity ratios, identifying technicians whose flat rate hours booked are below expectation and working with the workshop controller to understand whether the cause is skill, motivation, job allocation quality or booking-level issues that the service team's practices are creating
  • Managing the technician team's training and qualification development in liaison with the manufacturer's training programme, ensuring the workshop's skills matrix is adequate for the current and forecast vehicle parc and that high-voltage qualification is advancing at a pace consistent with the EV model population in the service lane

Customer Satisfaction and Manufacturer Standards:

  • Owning the department's manufacturer customer satisfaction survey results, reviewing survey responses in real time, identifying the specific service elements driving below-target scores and implementing the operational changes that address root cause rather than managing the symptom
  • Conducting proactive recovery contact with dissatisfied customers identified through survey results or complaint notifications, managing the conversation with genuine concern and appropriate resolution rather than a scripted customer relations response
  • Maintaining compliance with the manufacturer's standard programme requirements for the service department - equipment, tooling, trained technician headcount, booking system standards, health and safety requirements and the physical facility standard applicable to the brand - and managing any standard programme audit preparation accurately

Team Leadership and People Management:

  • Leading and managing the full service department team including Service Advisors, Service Administrator, workshop controller and the technician team in collaboration with the workshop controller, conducting performance reviews, managing absence, handling disciplinary matters through the correct HR process and maintaining a team environment where high standards are expected and high performance is recognised
  • Recruiting for service department vacancies in partnership with Venatu, ensuring that new team member selection is based on genuine competency assessment rather than availability pressure, and that induction is structured enough to give new advisors and technicians the best possible start in the role
  • Reporting service department performance to the Head of Aftersales or General Manager at the agreed frequency, providing accurate and honest reporting on commercial performance, team development and any operational risk or compliance concern

FAQ

What is the difference between a Service Manager and a Head of Aftersales? A Service Manager is accountable for the service department's operational and commercial performance - the service reception, workshop throughput, warranty and service plan functions and the team that delivers them. A Head of Aftersales typically holds accountability for the full aftersales operation including service, parts, accessories and often the bodyshop, carrying a broader P&L and leading multiple department managers rather than a single team. In some dealerships the titles are used for the same role; in others the Service Manager is one rung below the Head of Aftersales in a structured aftersales management hierarchy. Venatu confirms the exact scope with each employer before presenting candidates.

How does the EV transition affect the Service Manager's responsibilities? The Service Manager must ensure the department maintains technical capability - adequate numbers of high-voltage trained technicians, the correct personal protective equipment and safe working procedures for HV work, and the manufacturer's required diagnostic equipment - as the proportion of EV and hybrid vehicles in the service lane increases. They must also ensure the Service Advisor team has enough EV product knowledge to handle customer queries competently and that the booking process accurately captures the information the workshop needs to prepare for an EV service or repair. Read about how vehicle technology evolution is reshaping aftersales in The Evolution Of Automobiles.

What does a Service Manager earn in the UK? Experienced Service Managers at volume brand franchises typically earn between £42,000 and £58,000. Premium and prestige brand service managers earn between £48,000 and £68,000. Large department senior service managers earn between £54,000 and £76,000. All roles include a performance bonus and company car or allowance. Venatu benchmarks total package with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Service Manager? The primary progression route is to Head of Aftersales, which carries the full aftersales P&L including parts and accessories alongside service. From Head of Aftersales the pathway continues to Dealer Principal, General Manager and group-level aftersales director appointments. Service Managers who develop a measurable track record of labour sales growth, CSI improvement, workshop productivity increase and genuine team development are the strongest candidates for Head of Aftersales appointments.
