Senior Vehicle Technician Jobs

Senior Vehicle Technician Jobs UK

The Senior Vehicle Technician is the experienced, fully qualified and high-performing technician who has progressed beyond the standard Level 3 proficiency into a position of technical authority, workshop productivity and emerging peer leadership within the service department. They carry out the full range of light vehicle maintenance, diagnosis and repair with the speed and first-time fix rate that characterises a technician performing at the upper level of their peer group, and they contribute to the workshop's capability through informal mentoring, technical guidance and the steady, reliable output that a service manager relies on to anchor the workshop's performance on any given day.

The Senior Vehicle Technician designation sits in the layer between the standard qualified technician and the Master Technician. It describes the technician who has not yet completed, or chosen to pursue, the full Master Technician qualification pathway, but who demonstrably performs at a level above the standard qualified peer group in diagnostic depth, fault resolution speed, technical scope and the quality of their output. Many dealerships use the Senior designation formally in their workshop structure to reflect this performance tier and to attach a salary supplement that acknowledges the technician's contribution without requiring the full manufacturer Master Technician programme commitment.

The introduction of electrified and increasingly software-defined vehicles into the mainstream franchised service population is accelerating the technical gap between Senior Technicians who invest in EV and diagnostic system development and those who do not. The Senior Technician who has completed high-voltage safety training, applied it to real EV service and repair work, developed multi-manufacturer diagnostic software competency and is building towards a Master Technician or specialist EV qualification is one of the most commercially valuable professionals in the franchised workshop - and one of the most sought after in the current recruitment market.

Venatu recruits Senior Vehicle Technicians for permanent and contract roles across franchised car dealerships, fast fit and autocentre networks, fleet maintenance operations and independent specialist workshops throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership recruitment division. For the Master Technician level above, see the Master Technician page. For the diagnostic specialist route, see the Diagnostic Technician page.

Who We Recruit For

We place candidates with:

  • Franchised car dealerships across volume, premium and prestige manufacturer brands
  • Fast fit and autocentre networks with tiered technician structures
  • Fleet management and contract maintenance businesses with light vehicle workshop operations
  • Independent specialist workshops and performance vehicle servicing businesses
  • Manufacturer aftersales training operations requiring senior technician candidates

Roles We Place

  • Senior Technician / MOT Tester
  • Senior Technician (Developing Master Technician)
  • Senior EV and Hybrid Technician
  • Senior Technician (Premium Brand)

Who Can Apply

Senior Vehicle Technician roles attract qualified and high-performing candidates from franchised and independent workshop backgrounds. Strong placements typically come from:

  • Experienced Senior Vehicle Technicians at franchised dealerships or independent workshops who want to move to a new employer, a different franchise brand, a better-equipped workshop or an improved package
  • Qualified Vehicle Technicians at Level 3 with three or more years of post-qualification experience who have been performing at the top of their peer group - fastest booking unit times, highest first-time fix rates, lowest re-visit rates - and who want their performance level formally recognised in a Senior designation with the salary premium that reflects it
  • MOT Testers who are fully qualified and productive workshop technicians as well as testers, and who want to move to an employer that offers a senior technician salary structure rather than a standard flat rate technician arrangement
  • Diagnostic Technicians who have developed strong diagnostic capability but want to balance specialist diagnostic work with mainstream service production within a Senior Technician role rather than moving fully into a diagnostic specialist appointment
  • Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technicians who have completed high-voltage qualification and developed EV service and repair competency and want a Senior Technician role that formally recognises and rewards that specialism at the workshop production level
  • Apprentice Vehicle Technician programme completers who progressed rapidly through their training and have been operating at a level above the standard qualified technician since shortly after qualification, for whom the Senior designation is the natural next formal step
  • Fast Fit Vehicle Technicians who have developed a broader mechanical competency alongside their fast fit specialisation and want to move into a fully structured workshop environment where a Senior Technician pathway is available

Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent is the standard qualification. MOT Tester authorisation - Class 4 and 7 - is highly valued and is standard at most franchised operations. IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement or manufacturer equivalent is expected at Senior level for franchise brands with significant EV model populations. Manufacturer-specific certification at the brand's second or third tier of training progression is typical across franchised dealership Senior Technician appointments. Venatu confirms all qualification, certification and manufacturer training requirements with each employer before presenting candidates.

What the Role Involves

Production and Technical Work:

  • Carrying out the full range of scheduled maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair work allocated by the workshop controller, completing each job within or ahead of the standard time allocation, maintaining a first-time fix rate that places the technician consistently in the upper range of the workshop's performance data
  • Diagnosing complex faults across mechanical, electrical and electronic vehicle systems using manufacturer-specific diagnostic software, live data analysis, oscilloscope measurement and systematic fault isolation methodology, resolving faults that standard technicians have been unable to clear through first-level diagnostics
  • Carrying out MOT tests to DVSA Class 4 and Class 7 standards for vehicles presented through the service department and quick-lane booking system, applying the test standard rigorously and consistently and completing test documentation accurately within the DVSA's online testing service platform
  • Servicing and repairing electrified vehicles - hybrid and battery electric - within the appropriate high-voltage safety framework, applying isolation procedures, wearing specified PPE and working within the manufacturer's approved repair procedures for high-voltage system work

Technical Support and Peer Development:

  • Acting as a technical reference point for less experienced technicians in the workshop, answering diagnostic questions, suggesting diagnostic approach strategies and supporting colleagues who have spent an appropriate time on a job without resolving the fault before escalating to the workshop manager
  • Conducting informally structured check-ins with developing technicians working on complex jobs - not taking the job over, but helping them develop the diagnostic reasoning process that allows them to work more independently in subsequent similar scenarios
  • Supporting the induction of new workshop team members through the practical aspects of workshop procedure, tool and equipment usage and manufacturer-specific system orientation where the new team member's manufacturer experience is different from the current franchise

Workshop Standards:

  • Maintaining personal output quality standards with a re-visit rate that reflects the Senior Technician's care and accuracy in completing repairs to a standard that does not generate a customer return
  • Completing job cards, vehicle health check reports and digital inspection records accurately and on time for every vehicle worked on, supporting the service advisor team's ability to present additional work recommendations with photographic and diagnostic evidence
  • Maintaining the workshop bay in the clean and organised condition that the dealership's manufacturer standard programme requires, using the correct tool storage and maintenance procedures and reporting any workshop equipment defect to the workshop manager promptly

FAQ

What is the difference between a Senior Vehicle Technician and a Master Technician? A Senior Vehicle Technician is a fully qualified, high-performing technician who operates at the upper level of the standard peer group in terms of diagnostic depth, productivity and first-time fix rate, and who may carry an informal technical support role within the workshop. A Master Technician has completed the manufacturer's defined Master Technician qualification programme - the highest technical certification award within the brand's training framework - and holds formal technical authority for the most complex diagnostic and engineering challenges the workshop faces. The Senior Technician role is the natural stepping stone on the pathway toward Master Technician certification.

What EV qualifications are expected of a Senior Vehicle Technician? At franchised dealerships with a significant electrified model population, IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement or the manufacturer's own equivalent high-voltage qualification is increasingly required rather than optional at Senior Technician level. The qualification covers high-voltage system awareness, safe isolation procedures, personal protective equipment requirements and the specific repair scope authorised for the qualification level. Venatu confirms the exact manufacturer and IMI qualification requirements with each employer before presenting candidates. Read about how EV technology is reshaping the technical workforce in The Evolution Of Automobiles.

What does a Senior Vehicle Technician earn in the UK? Senior Vehicle Technicians at premium brand franchises typically earn between £36,000 and £48,000. EV and hybrid specialists earn between £38,000 and £52,000. Developing Master Technicians earn between £38,000 and £54,000. Tool allowances and manufacturer training support are standard across most franchised operations. Venatu benchmarks total package with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Senior Vehicle Technician? The primary progression route for technically focused candidates is to Master Technician through the manufacturer's certification programme, and then to manufacturer Technical Specialist or Diagnostic Specialist appointments. Candidates who develop team leadership and communication skills alongside their technical capability can progress to Workshop Supervisor, Workshop Manager and Head of Aftersales. Senior Technicians with EV specialism increasingly have opportunities in manufacturer technical support, training and field service engineering roles as EV fleet volumes grow.
