Regional Manager (Automotive) Jobs

Regional Manager (Automotive) Jobs UK

The Regional Manager in the automotive sector is a senior multi-site operational leader who holds commercial, operational and people performance accountability for a cluster of dealerships, service centres, fast fit branches, rental locations or network sites within a defined geographic region. The role bridges the group or network executive team above and the individual site leadership below - translating the business's strategic direction into operational execution across multiple locations while developing the site leaders who deliver the results.

In a franchised dealer group, the Regional Manager typically carries P&L accountability for four to ten sites, managing a group of General Managers or Heads of Business and ensuring each location meets its sales, aftersales, customer satisfaction and manufacturer standard programme requirements. In a fast fit or autocentre network, the Regional Manager drives branch performance across a territory, developing branch managers, managing cost efficiency and building the commercial discipline that makes a consistent customer and operational standard possible across a large number of lower-complexity sites. In a vehicle rental or mobility business, the Regional Manager is accountable for fleet utilisation, branch revenue, customer experience and the commercial execution of the business's pricing and channel strategy at local level.

What distinguishes an excellent automotive Regional Manager from a competent one is rarely their understanding of the operational levers - most candidates who reach this level understand their numbers. The distinction lies in their ability to develop the people who run the sites below them: identifying site leadership capability gaps early, coaching rather than simply directing, building genuine accountability in their site managers and creating an environment where problems surface upward before they become headline issues. The Regional Manager who builds a regional leadership team that consistently outperforms without needing constant intervention from above is the most commercially valuable senior leader in any multi-site automotive business.

Venatu recruits Regional Managers for permanent and contract roles across franchised dealer groups, automotive fast fit and service networks, vehicle rental businesses, fleet management businesses and automotive technology network operators throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership, truck and van and operational support recruitment divisions. For group-level director appointments, see the Operations Director and Group Aftersales Director pages.

Who Can Apply

Strong Regional Manager candidates in the automotive sector typically come from within the sector's senior site leadership tier. Strong placements typically come from:

  • Experienced Automotive Regional Managers or Area Managers who want to move to a new business, a different network model, a more commercially interesting portfolio of sites or an improved package
  • General Managers or Dealer Principals at large multi-franchise or high-turnover single sites who are ready to step into a multi-site leadership role, applying the full breadth of their operational management experience across a region rather than a single location
  • Heads of Business who have built a consistent performance track record at site level and who want to develop the people leadership dimension of their career in a role where influencing multiple sites and multiple leaders replaces the direct operational management of a single team
  • Fast Fit Branch Managers who have progressed to a cluster or area manager role within a fast fit or service network and want to formalise that multi-site accountability in a senior Regional Manager appointment with full regional P&L and team development responsibility
  • Operations Managers from automotive fleet, logistics or commercial vehicle businesses who have managed multi-site operational delivery at scale and want to move into a role with a stronger commercial and people development dimension
  • Head of Aftersales professionals at dealer group level who want to move from a functional leadership role into a broader regional general management position with sales, aftersales and business development accountability combined
  • Senior managers from adjacent multi-site sectors - retail, hospitality, logistics or financial services - who have led geographically dispersed operations at regional level and want to apply their multi-site leadership skills in the automotive sector, where their commercial discipline compensates for the sector-specific product knowledge acquired through structured induction

Strong Regional Manager candidates must demonstrate measurable multi-site performance improvement, evidence of site leader development and a commercial track record at P&L accountability level. Venatu confirms the regional scope, site count, performance framework and reporting structure with each employer before presenting candidates.

What the Role Involves

Commercial Performance Management:

  • Owning the regional P&L, reviewing site financial performance against budget at the required frequency, identifying the leading indicators of underperformance before they materialise in the management accounts and intervening at site level with specific, directed action rather than generic pressure
  • Conducting regular performance review meetings with each site's General Manager or branch manager, reviewing sales, aftersales, gross profit, customer satisfaction and cost performance against budget and prior periods, and holding each site leader meaningfully accountable for delivery against their agreed plan
  • Identifying commercial growth opportunities within the region - new trade or fleet relationships, aftersales capacity utilisation improvement, customer retention programme development, local fleet account development - and ensuring site leaders have the resource and priority to pursue them

People Leadership and Site Manager Development:

  • Coaching, developing and managing each site leader within the regional team, assessing their leadership capability, commercial confidence and operational competency and providing structured development support that increases their performance without creating dependence on the Regional Manager
  • Managing performance issues within the regional leadership team fairly and promptly, applying the employer's HR process correctly and escalating to HR Manager or group HR as required
  • Building succession depth within the region, identifying high-potential assistant managers and department heads who can develop into site leader roles and ensuring they are exposed to the experience and coaching that accelerates their readiness
  • Leading regional team meetings and events that build a shared understanding of performance priorities, operational standards and business direction

Operational Standards and Compliance:

  • Maintaining manufacturer programme standards across all franchise sites in the region - CSI, NSC audit scores, aftersales standard ratings, parts programme compliance and any other manufacturer KPI that carries a financial or reputational consequence for the group
  • Ensuring each site maintains the operational and safety compliance required by the employer's policies and by regulatory requirements applicable to the specific business type - whether DVSA compliance for commercial vehicle operations, FCA requirements for finance and insurance activity or fire safety and employer duty of care obligations across site premises
  • Managing capital investment, facility maintenance and site presentation standards across the region in liaison with the group's facilities and property function

Reporting and Group Contribution:

  • Providing the group's Operations Director or board with accurate, timely and commercially insightful regional performance reporting, highlighting risks and opportunities honestly rather than managing upward perception
  • Contributing to group-level strategy, project workstreams and cross-regional initiatives as a senior member of the business's leadership community, sharing regional best practice with peers and adopting group-wide improvements effectively within the region

FAQ

What is the difference between a Regional Manager and a General Manager in automotive? A General Manager or Head of Business is accountable for the full operational and commercial performance of a single dealership or site. A Regional Manager is accountable for a group of sites within a geographic area, managing the site leaders rather than the individual departments directly. The primary leadership challenge shifts from managing a single team to developing a team of leaders, and the primary commercial challenge moves from operating a business to improving the performance of multiple businesses simultaneously. The Regional Manager role demands a higher level of influence capability - achieving results through others who themselves lead teams.

How many sites does an automotive Regional Manager typically oversee? The range varies considerably by business model. Dealer group Regional Managers typically oversee four to ten franchised sites. Fast fit and service network Regional Managers manage larger portfolios - commonly twelve to twenty-five branches - where each site is operationally simpler but the management bandwidth required to maintain standards and performance across a larger number of locations is significant. Vehicle rental regional portfolios vary from five to fifteen branches depending on the business's scale and geographic dispersion. Venatu confirms the specific scope with each employer before presenting candidates.

What does a Regional Manager earn in the automotive sector? Dealer group Regional Managers typically earn between £55,000 and £80,000 base salary. Fast fit and service network Regional Managers earn between £45,000 and £62,000. Commercial vehicle and fleet regional managers earn between £52,000 and £75,000. Senior regional leaders at large or high-complexity portfolios earn between £65,000 and £95,000. All roles include a performance bonus and company car or allowance. Venatu benchmarks total package with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Regional Manager in automotive? Common progression routes include Operations Director, Group Aftersales Director, Group Sales Director and Managing Director. Regional Managers who develop a track record of sustained performance improvement across their portfolio, a pipeline of site leader talent they have personally developed and a credible commercial voice at group level are in the strongest position for group director appointments.
