What the Role Involves

Preventive Maintenance and Safety Inspection:

• Carrying out manufacturer-scheduled preventive maintenance services on buses, coaches and specialist PSV vehicles covering engine servicing, air braking system inspection and adjustment, cooling system maintenance, tyre checks and replacement, lighting, windscreen and wiper systems and all associated service items within the operator's maintenance programme
• Conducting DVSA safety inspections under AVE authorisation in accordance with the operator's recognised maintenance programme, systematically inspecting every safety-critical system against the defined standard, completing inspection documentation accurately and certifying vehicles as fit or issuing defect notices where items prevent safe return to service
• Preparing vehicles for DVSA Class 5 annual test where the technician holds Class 5 MOT Tester authorisation, completing pre-test rectification to bring vehicles to test standard and managing post-test rectification efficiently to minimise off-road time

Mechanical and System Repair:

• Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults across the full PSV chassis including engine management and ancillary systems, air brake system component replacement, air suspension diagnosis and repair, steering and axle component overhaul, cooling and exhaust system repair and gearbox service and fluid management
• Maintaining and repairing passenger-body and auxiliary systems including powered door mechanisms, kneeling suspension, passenger ramp and lift systems, heating and ventilation, on-board passenger information systems and CCTV infrastructure within the technician's authorised scope
• Diagnosing and repairing body electrical faults including cab controls, passenger saloon lighting, destination display systems, driver assistance systems and body CAN bus communication where within the technician's diagnostic scope

Diagnostics:

• Diagnosing complex mechanical and electronic system faults using manufacturer-specific diagnostic platforms, fault code reading and live data analysis, oscilloscope-based electrical fault tracing and structured systematic fault isolation methodology
• Managing repair time effectively in line with the workshop's daily vehicle availability schedule, communicating to the workshop supervisor where a fault is progressing to a complexity level that requires escalation to a PSV Engineer and managing the vehicle status communication to prevent its absence affecting the operator's service

Zero Emission and New Technology:

• Maintaining and repairing zero emission bus platforms where applicable, following high-voltage safety protocols for isolation, personal protective equipment and safe working procedures around high-voltage battery systems, electric motors and inverters
• Supporting the workshop team's development of zero emission technical competency by sharing manufacturer training knowledge and contributing to the team's collective understanding of new platform maintenance requirements as the operator's ZEB fleet grows

Documentation:

• Completing DVSA safety inspection certificates, vehicle defect notices and job cards accurately and on time for every vehicle maintained, ensuring the operator's maintenance record is compliant with the Traffic Commissioner's documentation requirements at all times
