Mobile Vehicle Technician Jobs

Mobile Vehicle Technician Jobs UK

The Mobile Vehicle Technician is a field-based automotive professional who carries out vehicle maintenance, diagnostic and repair work at the customer's location rather than at a fixed workshop. Operating from a fully equipped mobile service unit, the Mobile Vehicle Technician attends fleet depots, office car parks, private addresses and roadside locations to deliver servicing, safety inspections, minor repairs and diagnostic investigations on cars and light commercial vehicles wherever the customer and their vehicle are located.

The mobile vehicle technician model has grown significantly across three distinct employer types. Fleet operators with large car and LCV fleets find that a contracted mobile technician service attending their premises minimises vehicle off-road time and driver disruption. Manufacturers and automotive technology businesses are increasingly delivering scheduled maintenance and over-the-air software update support through mobile technician programmes, particularly for electric and connected vehicles where the customer's relationship with the brand extends well beyond the traditional dealer visit. Vehicle subscription and mobility businesses require mobile technicians to deliver and collect vehicles, carry out pre-delivery checks and attend minor issues at the customer's home or workplace.

For technicians who want to work with greater autonomy, interact directly with customers and apply their technical skills across a varied daily schedule of vehicle types rather than working a fixed bay in a dealership, the Mobile Vehicle Technician role offers a professionally rewarding alternative that is growing in demand across the UK automotive sector.

Venatu recruits Mobile Vehicle Technicians for permanent and contract roles across fleet service providers, manufacturer mobile maintenance programmes, automotive subscription and mobility businesses, warranty service providers and independent mobile automotive service operations throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership and operational support recruitment divisions.

Who Can Apply

Strong Mobile Vehicle Technician candidates typically come from:

  • Experienced Mobile Vehicle Technicians who want to move to a new employer, a different vehicle brand portfolio, a better-supported mobile operation or an improved package
  • Vehicle Technicians at franchised car dealerships holding Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance who want to move from a fixed workshop environment into a mobile role, carrying their diagnostic and repair skills into a field-based context with greater daily variety and customer contact
  • Diagnostic Technicians at franchised dealerships who want to apply their advanced fault-finding skills in a mobile context, attending customer locations to diagnose complex faults that cannot be resolved remotely and where trailering or recovering the vehicle to a workshop would be the only alternative
  • Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technicians who hold IMI EV qualification and want to work in a manufacturer mobile service or EV brand direct programme environment, attending electric vehicle owners at home or at their workplace for scheduled maintenance and software update support
  • Fleet Technicians from fleet VMU environments who have maintained car and LCV fleets and want to move into a mobile role visiting a territory of external fleet customers rather than working at a single fixed site
  • LCV Technicians or LCV Mechanics with strong multi-make van maintenance experience who want to move into a mobile fleet service role covering the light commercial vehicle side of a mixed car and van fleet account
  • Auto Electricians with car and LCV electrical diagnostic experience who want to develop into a full Mobile Vehicle Technician role encompassing mechanical maintenance and routine servicing alongside their electrical specialism
  • Apprentice Vehicle Technicians who have recently qualified and want to develop in a mobile service context, where the variety of vehicle types and customer interaction offers a different development environment to the traditional dealership workshop

IMI or City and Guilds Level 3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair is the standard technical qualification. For electric vehicle roles, IMI Level 3 Award in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement is required or employer-funded. Manufacturer diagnostic system training relevant to the vehicle brands in the mobile programme is typically provided as part of structured induction. A full Category B driving licence is required and a clean driving record is essential as the mobile workshop unit is a company vehicle used daily on public roads. Venatu confirms all qualification, diagnostic system and licence requirements with each employer before presenting candidates.

  • Diagnosing faults at customer locations using portable manufacturer or multi-brand diagnostic tools, oscilloscopes and associated test equipment, identifying root cause accurately before ordering parts or referring the vehicle for a workshop visit where the repair scope exceeds what is achievable in the field
  • Carrying out minor repairs that are within the scope of the mobile service unit's tooling and parts inventory including brake pad and disc replacement, battery replacement, wiper blades, bulbs and lighting module replacement, minor electrical component replacement and software update and calibration work on vehicles where this is deliverable via remote or portable OEM diagnostic equipment
  • Providing the customer or fleet manager with a clear, accurate assessment of any fault or additional maintenance need identified during the visit, advising on whether the repair is achievable on the next mobile visit, requires a workshop appointment or can be scheduled for a future date without safety or compliance risk

EV and Connected Vehicle Services:

  • For electric vehicle mobile technician roles: carrying out scheduled EV maintenance visits following the manufacturer's high-voltage safe working procedure, conducting battery health checks, software updates, charging system inspections and any maintenance items specified in the manufacturer's EV service plan
  • Managing over-the-air software update support and configuration changes for connected vehicle fleet customers, working remotely via OEM diagnostic tools where supported and attending the vehicle in person where a physical diagnostic or mechanical step is required alongside the software work
  • Advising electric vehicle fleet customers on battery health trends observed during scheduled maintenance visits and escalating any battery management system anomalies to the manufacturer or fleet manager promptly

Customer Communication and Scheduling:

  • Managing the daily visit schedule efficiently, confirming appointment times with customers and fleet coordinators, arriving punctually and communicating any schedule changes promptly
  • Acting as the direct point of contact between the customer and the employer's technical and customer service functions, handling first-line customer queries about the work carried out and directing any concerns that require management input to the appropriate contact within the business

FAQ

What is a Mobile Vehicle Technician and how does the role differ from a dealership technician? A Mobile Vehicle Technician carries out vehicle maintenance and repair at the customer's location from a fully equipped mobile service unit. A dealership technician works from a fixed workshop bay within a franchised or independent garage. The technical skills are the same. The mobile role requires greater self-organisation, direct customer communication capability and the ability to diagnose and resolve faults effectively without the full infrastructure of a workshop bay. Mobile technicians also typically cover a wider range of vehicle models across a territory rather than focusing on a single manufacturer's range.

What types of work can a Mobile Vehicle Technician carry out in the field? Mobile Vehicle Technicians can typically carry out full scheduled servicing, brake pad and disc replacement, battery and bulb replacement, minor electrical repairs, software updates and diagnostics using portable OEM or multi-brand diagnostic tools, tyre pressure checks and minor tyre issues, fluid replacements and top-ups, filter replacements and pre-MOT health checks. Major structural repairs, bodywork, glass replacement and work requiring a vehicle lift are generally not within mobile scope and are referred to a fixed workshop. The specific scope depends on the employer's mobile service model and the tooling carried in the mobile unit. Venatu confirms scope with each employer before presenting candidates.

Are Mobile Vehicle Technician roles suitable for EV-qualified technicians? Yes, and demand for EV-qualified Mobile Vehicle Technicians is growing rapidly. Manufacturers with direct sales or subscription models for electric vehicles are building mobile service programmes that deliver scheduled EV maintenance, battery health monitoring, software updates and minor repairs at the customer's home or workplace. IMI Level 3 EV qualification is required or employer-funded for these roles. The combination of strong diagnostic skills, EV qualification and a professional customer-facing approach is one of the most in-demand technical profiles in the emerging mobile automotive service sector. Read about how EV and connected vehicles are reshaping the automotive sector in The Evolution Of Automobiles.

What does a Mobile Vehicle Technician earn in the UK? Experienced Mobile Vehicle Technicians typically earn between £30,000 and £42,000. EV-qualified mobile technicians earn between £34,000 and £48,000. Mobile Diagnostic Technicians earn between £36,000 and £50,000. Senior mobile technicians earn between £38,000 and £52,000. All roles include a mobile service vehicle and fuel card. Venatu benchmarks total package expectations with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Mobile Vehicle Technician? Common progression routes include Senior Mobile Vehicle Technician, Mobile Team Leader, Workshop Controller and Workshop Manager. Mobile Vehicle Technicians who develop EV qualification, advanced diagnostic skills and a track record of strong customer satisfaction are well positioned for team leadership and management appointments. Some progress into manufacturer technical support, field technical specialist and automotive technology business roles as connected vehicle and EV service infrastructure continues to develop.
