What the Role Involves

Complex Diagnosis and Technical Escalation:

• Diagnosing the workshop's most complex multi-system faults, receiving escalated vehicles from other technicians where the primary diagnostic approach has not resolved the fault, and applying a structured diagnostic methodology to identify root cause accurately across mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and emissions system failures
• Using manufacturer diagnostic platforms, oscilloscopes, multimeters, CAN bus diagnostic tools, fuel pressure testing equipment, compression and leak-down testing and associated specialist tooling to gather accurate data across systems before forming a diagnostic conclusion
• Applying knowledge of manufacturer technical service bulletins, known fault patterns, technical campaign history and platform-specific technical characteristics to accelerate diagnostic accuracy and avoid unnecessary parts replacement
• Providing technical guidance to other technicians at the point of escalation, explaining the diagnostic approach taken and the evidence that supports the root cause conclusion in a way that builds the capability of the wider team

Quality, Warranty and Technical Standards:

• Carrying out quality checks at the request of the Workshop Controller or Workshop Manager on complex or high-value repairs before vehicles are returned to service, verifying that the repair is complete, the documentation is accurate and the test drive confirms the fault is fully resolved
• Supporting warranty documentation quality across the workshop, advising technicians on correct fault coding, cause and correction documentation and the parts identification required to satisfy manufacturer warranty audit requirements
• Maintaining Master Technician accreditation currency through the manufacturer's required continuing professional development programme, attending manufacturer technical training updates and manufacturer technical specialist events
• Supporting the workshop's annual test preparation quality and first-time pass rate where within the Master Technician's scope

EV and Advanced Systems:

• For EV-accredited Master Technicians: diagnosing and resolving complex high-voltage power train faults including traction battery management system errors, inverter and power electronics faults, on-board charger communication failures and electric motor performance issues, applying manufacturer HV diagnostic procedures and maintaining safe working discipline throughout

• Contributing to technical training sessions within the workshop and supporting the Workshop Manager in identifying technical development needs across the team
• Acting as the workshop's reference point for manufacturer technical advice lines and technical support resources
