What the Role Involves

Engine Block Machining:

  • Measuring cylinder bores for wear, scoring, taper and out-of-round using bore gauges and micrometers, recording findings against manufacturer specification and determining the correct oversize bore dimension required for reconditioning
  • Setting up and operating cylinder boring bars to machine bores to the correct oversize dimension with dimensional accuracy within the specified tolerance, followed by finish honing to the required surface finish and final bore diameter using honing machines and appropriate honing stones and coolant
  • Measuring and assessing main bearing bores and big end bores for alignment, wear and dimensional accuracy, carrying out line boring or align boring on main bearing housings where required to restore correct crankshaft alignment
  • Cleaning, degreasing and pressure testing cylinder blocks before and after machining to identify cracks, porosity or coolant passage defects that would prevent the reconditioned engine from sealing correctly under operating conditions

Crankshaft Reconditioning:

  • Measuring crankshaft main and big end journals for wear, scoring, taper, out-of-round and undersize using outside micrometers, recording dimensions against specification limits and determining the correct regrind undersize for each journal
  • Setting up and operating crankshaft grinding machines to regrind main and big end journals to the correct undersize with a consistent radius at journal fillets, polishing journals to the required surface finish specification and verifying final dimensions against the target undersize

Cylinder Head Work:

  • Inspecting cylinder heads for cracks, distortion and combustion face condition, pressure testing water jackets and combustion chambers to identify porosity or crack faults
  • Resurfacing cylinder head combustion faces using surface grinding or milling equipment to remove distortion and restore the specified surface finish and flatness required for correct head gasket sealing
  • Cutting valve seats to the correct angle and width using valve seat cutting equipment, selecting the correct cutting pilot and seat cutter for each valve seat application and verifying the finished seat dimension and contact pattern accurately
  • Reaming or replacing valve guides to restore the correct stem-to-guide clearance for each valve position, checking finished guide bore diameter against specification

Assembly and Quality:

  • Assembling reconditioned short engines or long engines where within the machinist's role scope, fitting oversize pistons and rings to the correct bore, fitting new big end and main bearing shells to the correct undersize, torquing fasteners to specification and verifying clearances at each stage
