The General Sales Manager (GSM) leads the vehicle sales performance of a franchised dealership, holding accountability for the new and used vehicle sales departments, the sales team, the finance and insurance function and the commercial outcomes that collectively define the dealership's sales composite. The GSM is the most commercially accountable sales leader within the dealership, translating volume targets, margin requirements and customer satisfaction expectations into a daily management discipline across a team of Car Sales Executives, sales managers, the Business Manager and support staff.
In a well-run dealership, the General Sales Manager sets the tone of the sales environment. They build a sales process that is consistent, compliant and commercially sharp, coach their team against it continuously, manage the daily pipeline with clarity and manage the manufacturer relationship on the sales side with professionalism and commercial accuracy. The GSM who delivers consistent composite performance, maintains strong CSI scores and actively develops the people around them is one of the most commercially valuable managers in the sector and one of the most natural pathways into General Manager and Dealer Principal appointments.

FAQ
What does a General Sales Manager do in a franchised dealership? A General Sales Manager leads and manages the vehicle sales function of a franchised dealership, covering new and used vehicle retail, fleet and business sales where applicable and the finance and insurance department. Responsibilities include managing daily and monthly sales performance against composite targets, coaching and developing the sales team, managing used vehicle stock, overseeing the manufacturer bonus programme and reporting to the General Manager or Dealer Principal.
What is the difference between a Sales Manager and a General Sales Manager? A Sales Manager typically leads a single department - new cars, used cars or fleet - within the dealership sales function. A General Sales Manager holds accountability for all vehicle sales departments collectively, managing the Sales Managers and the sales team as a whole, owning the full sales composite and carrying responsibility for the sales department's overall commercial outcome. The GSM role is the step between department-level sales management and full dealership General Management.
What composite performance metrics does a General Sales Manager manage? Core composite metrics include retail units sold (new and used), margin per unit retailed, finance penetration rates, insurance penetration rates, net income per unit from F&I products, used vehicle stock turn, used vehicle days in stock and CSI (Customer Satisfaction Index) scores. Manufacturer bonus eligibility often adds volume-linked metrics around demonstration penetration, order bank depth and sales process compliance to the GSM's performance framework. Venatu discusses the specific composite structure with each employer before presenting candidates.
What does a General Sales Manager earn in the UK? At volume single-site franchised operations GSMs typically earn between £40,000 and £55,000 base with OTE of £60,000 to £90,000. Prestige and high-volume operations carry OTE of £75,000 to £110,000 or more. Interim rates typically range from £450 to £700 per day. Venatu benchmarks package and OTE expectations with each employer before beginning a search.
What is the progression from General Sales Manager? The most common and direct progression is to General Manager and from there to Dealer Principal. GSMs who develop strong aftersales commercial awareness alongside their sales management excellence move into General Manager appointments most quickly. In dealer groups, Group Sales Manager and Regional Sales Director roles are also established progression routes. For Director and Group Managing Director appointments visit Venatu Executive.
