General Manager (Dealership) Jobs

General Manager (Dealership) Jobs UK

The General Manager of a franchised car or commercial vehicle dealership carries one of the most commercially complex and operationally demanding leadership roles in the automotive retail sector. Accountable for the full performance of the dealership across vehicle sales, aftersales, finance and insurance, customer satisfaction and manufacturer relations, the General Manager operates as the operational head of the business, translating the Dealer Principal's commercial vision into daily management reality or, in many single-site operations, holding both the strategic and operational leadership of the site as a combined responsibility.

In a dealer group context, the General Manager runs their site as a profit centre, owning the P&L, managing the department heads across sales, aftersales and finance, maintaining the manufacturer relationship and delivering against composite, CSI and volume targets. In a single-site independently owned dealership the title is often synonymous with Dealer Principal, with the General Manager carrying full accountability for every commercial and operational outcome.

Venatu recruits General Managers for permanent and interim appointments at franchised car and commercial vehicle dealerships, multi-franchise dealer group sites and used car supermarket operations throughout the UK. Senior and executive-level General Manager appointments are managed through Venatu Executive. This role sits within our car dealership and truck and van recruitment divisions.

FAQ

What is the difference between a General Manager and a Dealer Principal? A Dealer Principal is typically the manufacturer-approved franchise holder and the most senior leader of a dealership or group, with ultimate accountability for the business's franchise agreement and its commercial and regulatory obligations. A General Manager operates as the operational leader of a site or dealership within the dealer group structure, reporting to the Dealer Principal or group board. In many single-site or owner-operated dealerships the two roles are carried by the same individual. In larger dealer groups the General Manager manages the site operation while the Dealer Principal or group leadership sets strategic direction and holds the manufacturer relationship at group level. Venatu clarifies the structure and reporting lines with each employer before presenting candidates.

What does a Dealership General Manager's P&L typically cover? A dealership P&L covers new vehicle sales revenue and margin, used vehicle sales revenue and margin, finance and insurance income, service and parts revenue and margin, bodyshop revenue and margin where applicable, manufacturer bonus income and the full cost base of the site including payroll, facilities, marketing and cost of stocking. The General Manager is accountable for the net margin delivered by the site against the composite targets set by the manufacturer and the group or ownership. Venatu confirms the specific P&L scope with each employer before presenting candidates.

What manufacturer relations skills does a Dealership General Manager need? A General Manager needs the commercial credibility and communication clarity to represent the dealership effectively in manufacturer business reviews, respond constructively to area manager action plans and ensure the site is meeting volume, process and customer satisfaction standards that protect franchise eligibility and bonus, dealer development fund and co-op marketing access. Building a productive working relationship with the manufacturer area manager is a significant contributor to the commercial performance of a well-run dealership. Venatu assesses manufacturer relationship management capability as a core component of every General Manager evaluation.

What does a Dealership General Manager earn in the UK? General Managers at volume single-site franchised operations typically earn between £55,000 and £75,000 base with OTE of £70,000 to £100,000. Prestige, multi-franchise and high-volume sites carry OTE of £85,000 to £125,000 or more. Interim roles typically range from £500 to £800 per day. Venatu benchmarks total package expectations with each employer before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Dealership General Manager? Common progression routes include Dealer Principal, Group Operations Manager, Regional Director and Managing Director. General Managers who deliver strong composite and CSI performance consistently and build a track record of developing management teams are in the strongest position for multi-site and group leadership appointments.
