What the Role Involves

• Receiving complex and intermittent fault referrals from the wider workshop team and carrying out a structured, evidence-based diagnostic process to identify root cause
• Using manufacturer-specific and generic diagnostic platforms to read, interrogate and clear fault codes, access live data streams, perform component activation and review freeze frame and historical fault data
• Using an oscilloscope to capture and analyse waveforms from sensors, actuators, injectors, coils and communication bus lines to identify component-level electrical faults that do not generate fault codes or cannot be confirmed by code reading alone
• Performing network analysis on CAN, LIN and automotive Ethernet buses to identify communication faults, rogue nodes and data frame errors affecting vehicle system integration
• Working through wiring diagrams, circuit diagrams and pinout data to trace and test circuit continuity, insulation resistance, voltage drops and reference signal quality
• Diagnosing hybrid and electric vehicle high-voltage system faults in compliance with high-voltage safety procedures and employer protocols
• Managing the manufacturer technical hotline relationship for complex cases, providing the technical evidence and vehicle data required to obtain escalation support efficiently
• Completing detailed and accurate diagnose reports including the fault found, method of diagnosis, components tested, evidence captured and repair recommendation
• Mentoring junior or developing technicians on diagnostic methodology, tool use and systematic fault-finding approaches where directed by the Workshop Manager
• Keeping manufacturer and system diagnostic qualifications current through training programmes and technical updates provided by the employer
