Depot Manager Jobs

Depot Manager Jobs UK

The Depot Manager carries operational and commercial responsibility for the day-to-day running of a transport depot, distribution centre or bus and coach engineering base. Managing drivers or engineering staff, vehicle availability and compliance, yard operations, customer service delivery and health and safety, the Depot Manager is the operational backbone of the transport businesses they run.

In road freight and logistics, the Depot Manager is accountable for the timely and compliant movement of freight through the depot facility, managing driver scheduling, load planning, vehicle defect reporting, O-licence obligations and the operational relationships with customers, subcontractors and hauliers. Venatu recruits Depot Managers for permanent and interim roles across road haulage and logistics operators, distribution businesses, bus and coach operators and fleet maintenance operations throughout the UK. This role sits within our truck and van, bus and coach and operational support recruitment divisions. For senior multi-site or Director-level appointments, visit Venatu Executive.

FAQ

What does a Depot Manager do in a transport operation? A Depot Manager is responsible for the full operational running of a transport depot or distribution centre. This includes managing drivers and operational staff, overseeing vehicle scheduling and dispatch, maintaining O-licence compliance at the operating centre, managing customers and service delivery performance, overseeing yard and facility operations and reporting operational and financial performance to senior management.

Does a Depot Manager need a Transport Manager CPC? For road transport operations where the depot is a designated operating centre on an operator licence, the employer will need a CPC holder nominated at that centre. In many businesses the Depot Manager fulfils this role and a CPC in Road Haulage or Passenger Transport is either required or strongly preferred. In larger operations a dedicated Compliance Manager or Transport Manager may hold the nomination separately. Venatu confirms the specific qualification requirements with each employer before presenting candidates.

What is the difference between a Depot Manager and a Transport Manager? A Transport Manager in a regulatory context is the individual nominated on the operator licence with personal legal accountability for compliance. A Depot Manager holds broader operational accountability including people management, service delivery, facility management and financial performance. In smaller operations one person carries both functions. In larger businesses the roles are separated, with the Transport Manager or Compliance Manager reporting into or working alongside the Depot Manager. Venatu clarifies the scope of each role with the employer before presenting candidates.

What does a Depot Manager earn in the UK? Salaries range from £38,000 for a single-site depot manager at a smaller operation to £72,000 or more for a large multi-function distribution centre or General Manager role. Interim day rates typically range from £350 to £550. Venatu benchmarks package expectations with each client before beginning a search.

What is the progression from Depot Manager? Common progression routes include Senior Depot Manager, Regional Operations Manager, Head of Transport and Operations Director.
