The Dealer Accountant is the financial control centre of a franchised dealership or dealer group. Unlike a generalist accountant in another sector, the Dealer Accountant operates within a highly specific environment defined by manufacturer composite reporting requirements, DMS-based accounting, vehicle stock funding and floorplan management, departmental gross profit analysis and the monthly reporting cycle that underpins how every franchised dealer measures and manages its commercial performance.
The precision and speed with which a Dealer Accountant closes the month, reconciles the accounts and prepares the composite return directly affects the Dealer Principal's ability to make timely operational decisions. In a dealer group environment, the quality of financial oversight at site level also determines the accuracy of group-level reporting. It is a role where sector-specific knowledge is not a bonus - it is essential from day one.
Venatu recruits Dealer Accountants and Automotive Finance professionals for permanent and interim roles across franchised car and commercial vehicle dealerships, used car operations and dealer groups throughout the UK. This role sits within our car dealership and operational support recruitment divisions. For senior Financial Controller or Finance Director appointments, visit Venatu Executive.

FAQ
What is a Dealer Accountant and how is the role different from a general accountant? A Dealer Accountant manages the financial accounts of a franchised dealership or dealer group within a highly specific environment defined by manufacturer composite reporting, DMS-based accounting, vehicle stock funding management and departmental gross profit analysis by franchised trading area. The composite return, stock account reconciliation and DMS system management are not skills that transfer directly from general accounting practice. Most employers require or strongly prefer candidates with direct franchised dealer accounting experience. Venatu advises candidates from outside the motor trade on the transition and the specific knowledge required.
What DMS systems do Dealer Accountants use? The most commonly used dealer management systems in UK franchised dealerships are Kerridge Autoline, CDK Drive, Pinewood and Keyloop. Each has its own accounting architecture, reporting structure and composite output format. Proficiency in at least one of these systems is expected for the majority of dealership accountant roles. Venatu confirms the DMS in use with each employer before presenting candidates.
What is a manufacturer composite return? The composite return is the monthly financial return submitted by franchised dealerships to their manufacturer or importer. It provides a standardised view of the dealership's financial performance across defined trading areas including new vehicle sales, used vehicle sales, aftersales and parts. Manufacturers use composite data to benchmark dealer performance, manage bonus and support payments and assess operational health. Producing an accurate composite return to a tight month-end deadline is one of the core skills of an experienced Dealer Accountant.
What qualifications does a Dealer Accountant need? Many Dealer Accountants in the UK are qualified through AAT at technician level, with a significant number also holding or working towards ACCA, CIMA or ACA qualification. However, in practice, demonstrable DMS competency and direct franchised dealer accounting experience often carry as much weight as formal qualification with most employers. Venatu assesses both qualification level and practical system experience when matching candidates to roles.
What does a Dealer Accountant earn in the UK? Experienced Dealer Accountants typically earn between £34,000 and £48,000. Senior accountants and Financial Controllers at single-site operations earn between £44,000 and £68,000. Group Financial Controller roles at multi-site dealer groups typically range from £62,000 to £82,000. Interim rates range from £300 to £500 per day depending on the complexity of the engagement. Venatu benchmarks package expectations with each client before beginning a search.
What is the progression from Dealer Accountant? Common progression routes include Senior Dealer Accountant, Financial Controller, Group Financial Controller and Finance Director. In larger dealer groups there are also routes into group operations, commercial management and board-level financial leadership.
