Agricultural Technician Jobs

Agricultural Technician Recruitment UK

The Agricultural Technician keeps the machinery that feeds the country running. Working across tractors, combine harvesters, balers, sprayers, telehandlers and a growing range of precision farming and GPS-guided equipment, it is one of the most technically diverse and practically demanding engineering roles in the UK. Tight harvest windows mean downtime is not an option, and the breadth of systems knowledge required - mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and increasingly software-based - places Agricultural Technicians among the most skilled and versatile engineers in the vehicle and machinery sector.

Venatu recruits Agricultural Technicians and Agricultural Machinery Engineers for permanent, contract and mobile roles across agricultural machinery dealerships, rural fleet operators and specialist agricultural vehicle businesses throughout the UK. This role connects to our broader truck and van and operational support recruitment activity given the significant overlap in mechanical and hydraulic systems knowledge. FAQ

What qualifications does an Agricultural Technician need in the UK? Most employers require a relevant Level 3 qualification in agricultural engineering, agricultural machinery technology or a related mechanical discipline (City and Guilds, NVQ, NPTC/LANTRA or equivalent). Brand-specific manufacturer training certificates from John Deere, AGCO, CNH or Claas are highly valued. Technicians from HGV, plant or automotive backgrounds with strong mechanical fundamentals are regularly considered where manufacturer training can be provided. Venatu confirms the qualification expectations with each employer before beginning a search.

Can HGV or automotive technicians move into agricultural engineering? Yes. The mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems knowledge developed in HGV, commercial vehicle and plant maintenance roles transfers well into agricultural engineering. The primary learning requirement is brand-specific and crop-system knowledge, which most agricultural dealerships provide through manufacturer training programmes. Venatu actively places technicians from HGV and commercial vehicle backgrounds into agricultural roles. Read about how skills transfer across vehicle sectors in The Evolution Of Automobiles.

What does an Agricultural Technician earn in the UK? Qualified Agricultural Technicians typically earn between £34,000 and £44,000. Senior technicians and mobile field service engineers earn between £42,000 and £54,000. Precision farming and agricultural auto electrical specialists earn between £38,000 and £52,000. Overtime and seasonal bonus arrangements can increase effective earnings during harvest periods. Venatu benchmarks package expectations with each client before beginning a search.

What is the difference between a workshop and a field service Agricultural Technician? A workshop-based Agricultural Technician works primarily from a dealership or business workshop with machinery brought in for service and repair. A field service Agricultural Technician is primarily mobile, travelling to farms, estates and contractor sites for maintenance and breakdown response. Field roles require a service vehicle, a broader range of tools and the ability to operate independently in remote locations. Venatu confirms the working pattern for each role before presenting candidates.

Is there demand for Agricultural Technicians across the UK? Yes. The agricultural engineering skills shortage is acute across most UK regions and is particularly pronounced in arable farming areas during spring and harvest seasons. Demand for precision farming and GPS-capable technicians is growing alongside the adoption of technology-led farming practices. Venatu recruits across all UK agricultural regions.
