In the DNA

At Venatu, we work every day with people across the automotive, bus and commercial vehicle sectors. Every so often, a story comes along that perfectly captures why this industry is more than just a job. It is a vocation passed down through generations.

One such story belongs to Graham, our Associate Director of Contracting Services.

Graham began his career in the automotive industry in 1985, starting out with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, now known as South Yorkshire Transport. From the very beginning, the industry became more than just a workplace. It became a long term commitment.

In 1999, Graham joined Optare, initially working as a technician. His progression was rapid, driven by commitment, capability and a deep understanding of service delivery. Within six months he was promoted to Shift Supervisor, and after just 12 months he stepped into the role of Regional Service Manager.

As his career developed, Graham was asked to take responsibility for running the Rotherham Service Centre, alongside Manchester, for Optare. He held this role for four years, working closely with teams who shared the same focus on supporting bus operators and keeping vehicles safely on the road.

This story, however, is not just about one career.

In 2010, Graham’s eldest son Dan joined the Optare workshop on an extended work experience placement. What began as an opportunity to learn soon became a long term career. Dan worked his way through the business, gaining experience, trust and responsibility along the way. In 2025, he was promoted to Workshop Supervisor, marking a proud moment for both father and son.

There is a photograph that captures this journey perfectly. Dan is sitting in the very chair Graham once occupied. Beside him sits Riley, Graham’s grandson. Three generations connected by one workshop, one industry and one shared passion.

For this family, buses and the service support that keeps them moving are truly in the DNA.

This year marks 41 years for Graham in the automotive industry. Dan is now 16 years into his own career, and the future may already be taking shape with Riley watching on.

The wider family connection does not stop there. Graham’s other son works as a technician in an HGV workshop, while his stepson is part of the parts department within a bus and coach manufacturer’s aftersales operation. Different roles and different paths, all within the same industry.

At Venatu, we are proud to work with people like Graham. His story reflects the dedication, longevity and pride that define the automotive and transport sectors, and why we are passionate about supporting the people who keep them moving.
