My Tech Story: Danny Whetnall, 25 Years in the Motor Trade

At Venatu Automotive, we work with technicians at every stage of their career. Our My Tech Story series shares real journeys from people working in the motor trade, showing how they got started, what they have learned, and what keeps them motivated.

This is the story of Danny Whetnall.

How Did You Get into the Motor Trade?

I did not do particularly well at school, but my teacher always said I was very practical and tactile. I learned much better using my hands rather than from books.

Because of that, I went straight into a garage apprenticeship. In the early days, I was working three jobs and earning around fifty pounds a week. It was not easy, but I did not mind. I just wanted to learn, gain experience, and get properly stuck in.

How Long Have You Been in the Trade?

I have been working in the motor trade for over twenty five years.

Where Were Your First Places of Work?

My first proper job was at Peter Ramsey, where I learned the trade from absolute scratch. I started at the very bottom and worked my way up to carrying out full engine rebuilds.

After that, I was headhunted by Renault, where I worked on PDI. That experience gave me valuable dealership exposure and the confidence to open my own business before moving into contracting.

What Do You Enjoy Most About Working as a Technician?

Every day is different. No two jobs are the same, and even after all these years, I am still learning something new. That variety is one of the things I enjoy most about the trade.

What Is the Most Rewarding Part of the Job?

Getting a non runner back on the road. There is nothing better than taking something that does not work and making it work again.

What Separates a Good Technician from a Great One?

Attention to detail. The small things matter, and they are what really make the difference.

What Do You Enjoy Outside of Work?

Holidays and relaxing. Switching off, recharging, and spending time away from the tools.

What Is Your Dream Car?

Either a Renault 5 GT Turbo or a Mk4 Escort Turbo. Proper old school cars.
